Pest control in Avonsleigh

Avonsleigh is named after J.W. Wright's guest house. Its post office opened as Koenig's in 1902 and took the Avonsleigh name in 1911.

Rabbits and the landowner

On the planning maps, about two fifths of Avonsleigh is green wedge and farming zone and almost half is rural conservation. Less than a tenth is zoned for houses.

Rabbits are declared established pest animals under the Catchment and Land Protection Act. Section 20 puts the duty on the landowner: take reasonable steps to stop them spreading and, as far as possible, eradicate them. A pest controller who uses pesticides on them needs the pest animal authorisation on their licence, which the licence guide explains.

Deer

Cardinia describes deer as protected wildlife, managed on public land through the Game Management Authority. The council is a partner in the state's Peri-urban Deer Control Plan, which says deer have been reported in the ranges for about ten years.

Termites, one property at a time

All of Avonsleigh is in Cardinia, which shows on each property information certificate whether that property is termite prone. Under the Building Regulations, a detached garage or shed need not be protected, and the building surveyor decides what the building code needs for other new work. Termites has the rest.
