Is it a job for a pest controller?
Some of what turns up in a house in the hills is protected, and some of it is somebody else's job. Who to call for what has the detail.
- Pest controller
- Termites, rats and mice, cockroaches, ants, spiders, fleas, bed bugs and wasp nests. Anyone doing it for a living with pesticides needs a licence.
- You, or a wildlife controller
- A brushtail possum in the roof. It is protected. It may be trapped humanely and released on the same property within 50 m, and closing the way in keeps it out. Trapping a ringtail needs a permit.
- Snake catcher
- Snakes are protected. A licensed snake controller moves them; 136 186 gives a list.
- Beekeeper
- A honeybee swarm. Most beekeepers take one for a small fee, and some for free.
- Council deer program
- Deer in the garden. A state plan covers the outer east, and Yarra Ranges runs a program on 1300 368 333.
- You, by law
- Rabbits, and other established pest animals on your land. Landowners must take all reasonable steps to stop their spread.
Checked 25 October 2026 against Department of Health: pest control legislation, Victorian Government: brushtail possum management methods, DELWP: Living with snakes fact sheet (2021), Yarra Ranges Council: bees and wasps, Victorian Government: Peri-urban Deer Control Plan, Yarra Ranges Council: deer, Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (Vic), s.20 (authorised version 072) and Cardinia Shire Council: problem animals.
