Pest control in Macclesfield

Gold was found in Macclesfield Creek in 1865. Now the soil grows flowers and potatoes, and the town is known for its goats and alpacas.

We connect you with a local pest controller who works in the hills.

Farmland, and no residential zone

Almost nine tenths of Macclesfield is green wedge and farming zone on the planning maps, and none of it is zoned residential. The soil grows flowers and potatoes, and goats and alpacas are a local sight.

On farmland the Catchment and Land Protection Act puts a duty on the landowner to take reasonable steps against established pest animals: stop the spread and, as far as possible, eradicate them. Cardinia's council, over the boundary, names rabbits as one. A pest controller who uses pesticides for that work needs the pest animal authorisation on their licence. The licence guide shows how to check.

Deer in Yarra Ranges

Yarra Ranges has run a deer program, funded by the state, since 2021. It uses DeerScan reports, harvesters, volunteer shooters and fencing. The council's Deer Program Officer is on 1300 368 333.

Sheds, houses and baits

The whole of Yarra Ranges is designated as prone to termites. A new house or extension has to be protected, but a detached garage or shed need not be.

Rat bait around sheds has changed too. The second-generation anticoagulants have been restricted chemical products since a one-year suspension began on 24 March 2026, used only under the Gazette instructions, and loose throw packs only inside tamper-resistant stations. Rats and mice explains, and termites covers the building rules.
