The orchid's only bush
Kilsyth South's bushland is the only place the Kilsyth South Spider Orchid is found. Close to half the suburb is green wedge and farming land on the planning maps, and more than a quarter is under a vegetation protection overlay. Housing makes up about a third.
Anyone applying pesticide in a pest control business needs a licence from the Department of Health, and has to keep a record of every application for three years: the product, where it went, the pests and the customer. The licence page explains how to check a licence on the register.

All Maroondah
The suburb is wholly in the City of Maroondah, which designated its entire municipality as a termite area on 14 April 2005. New building work must be protected, except a detached shed or garage. Maroondah doesn't help with pests on private property, so a wasp nest in your yard is yours to have treated; a bee swarm goes to an apiarist. Who to call lists who handles what.

Pest animals on the farmland
On the green wedge blocks, established pest animals are the landowner's to deal with. The Catchment and Land Protection Act requires reasonable steps to stop their spread and, as far as possible, eradicate them. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits.
