Yarra Ranges or Maroondah: same termite answer

Most of Kilsyth is in the Shire of Yarra Ranges and the rest is in the City of Maroondah, close to nine parts in ten against one on the planning maps. For termites the line doesn't matter. Yarra Ranges is designated as a termite area across the whole shire, and Maroondah designated its entire municipality on 14 April 2005. Either side, new building work has to be protected, apart from a detached shed or garage.

Kilsyth was built mostly on cleared orchard land, and an older house is checked with a timber pest inspection. Treatment needs a pest controller whose licence includes timber pests. Termites has the detail.

Where the councils differ

On wasps and bees, neither council will come onto your land. Yarra Ranges treats nests on council land only, and Maroondah gives no help with pests on private property. A wasp nest in your yard is a job for a licensed pest controller. A honeybee swarm goes to an apiarist, which both councils suggest. Wasps and bees has more.

Shopping centres and the Canterbury Road strip

Churinga and Kilsyth shopping centres are the two main precincts, with smaller strips on Colchester Road, Collins Place and Hawthory Road, and an industrial area along Canterbury Road from Liverpool Road to Dorset Road. A food business in any of them must take all practicable measures to keep pests out and to eradicate them. When a business hires a pest controller, it can check the licence on the Department of Health's public register first; the licence page shows how.

The green wedge edge

About a quarter of Kilsyth is still green wedge and farming land. A landowner there must take reasonable steps against established pest animals under the Catchment and Land Protection Act. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits.
