Pest control in Ferntree Gully
Ferntree Gully is the 1959 estates of Mountain Gate and Fairhills, with the national park rising behind the old village.

Estates from 1959
Much of Ferntree Gully was built as planned estates. Mountain Gate opened in October 1959 as the “town of a thousand homes”, and Johnson Park and Fairhills, between Blind Creek and Burwood Highway, were laid out the same year and mostly built in the 1960s. Kent Park followed after Hooker-Rex bought 44 hectares in the late 1960s. Today about two-thirds of the suburb is ordinary residential zoning.
Knox asks the owner for a termite statement before it issues a building permit, so an extension on one of those houses brings the question up. For the house itself, a timber pest inspection is the usual check, and treatment needs a pest controller licensed for timber pests. Termites explains both standards.

The national park as a backdrop
The Dandenong Ranges National Park rises behind the suburb, especially behind the village, and its eastern edge meets the park. Gum trees are everywhere. That makes rats a problem with a wildlife side: the strongest rat baits, the second-generation anticoagulants, have been suspended for a year from 24 March 2026, and BirdLife found Powerful Owls and Southern Boobooks among dead birds carrying dangerous levels of them. Rats and mice covers what to do first.

Station Street and Mountain Gate
The village around Station Street, Alpine Street and Forest Road has supermarkets, butchers, a greengrocer, restaurants and cafés, and Mountain Gate Shopping Centre sits at Ferntree Gully Road and Burwood Highway. Every one of those food businesses has a duty under the Food Standards Code to keep pests out as far as practicable and to get rid of any that get in.

What Knox does and doesn't
Knox investigates pest nests on public land through Parks Services (9298 8000). It doesn't hire out possum traps, because possums are protected, and it points you to an apiarist for a hive. It does run a trap program for Indian mynas. Who to call sorts the rest.

- Same postcode, mostly Knox, but part of it is Yarra Ranges, where the whole shire is a designated termite area. The address decides.
- Tremont
- Almost all Yarra Ranges and almost all national park, inside the shire's termite designation.
