Pest control in Upper Ferntree Gully
Upper Ferntree Gully has the 1,000 steps inside its boundary and a council line running through it, so two streets can sit under different termite rules.

Two councils, two termite answers
Upper Ferntree Gully is split between Knox and Yarra Ranges. Most of it is Knox, about two-thirds on the planning maps; the rest is Yarra Ranges. Your address decides which rule you meet when you build.
On the Yarra Ranges side, the whole shire is designated under the Building Regulations as likely to have termites, and new building work there has to be protected (a detached shed or garage excepted). On the Knox side, the owner signs a termite statement before a building permit is issued. Either way, termite treatment needs a pest controller licensed for timber pests. Termites covers inspections and the standards.

Ferny Creek and the 1,000 steps
Ferntree Gully Park, with its 1,000 steps laid in memory of the Kokoda Track campaign, is part of the Dandenong Ranges National Park and sits inside the suburb. Kings Park lies on Willow Road beside Ferntree Gully and Ferny creeks, and Melbourne Water has a retarding basin along Ferny Creek.
A few per cent of the suburb is under the flood overlay on the planning maps. Around the house, the Department of Health's advice on mosquitoes is to get rid of stagnant water where they can breed, and to avoid bites.

Food along Burwood Highway
The suburb's shops are mostly on Burwood Highway, and much of it is food. A food business must take all practicable measures to stop pests getting in and to eradicate them if they do; that is the Food Standards Code, not a council preference. A heavy cockroach infestation, in a kitchen or a house, is a job for a licensed operator. Spiders and insects has the detail.
