We connect you with a local pest controller who works in the hills.

Outside the growth boundary

Most of Belgrave South lies beyond Melbourne's urban growth boundary, in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges. On the planning maps it is about six-tenths green wedge and three-tenths rural conservation zone, and none of it is in a residential zone.

Bigger blocks carry a landowner's duty under the Catchment and Land Protection Act: reasonable steps to stop established pest animals from spreading, and to eradicate them as far as possible. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits. Deer are handled separately, through Yarra Ranges' deer program on 1300 368 333.

Spraying near Baluk Willam

The Baluk Willam Nature Conservation Reserve covers 67.5 hectares and holds more than 70 species of orchid. If you live near it, or near any bush, it is reasonable to ask a pest controller exactly what they will apply and where. A licensed operator has to keep a record of every treatment for three years: the product, where it went, the pests it was for, the re-entry period and the customer. Who to call covers checking the licence first.

Building after a fire, or extending

The 1983 Ash Wednesday fires destroyed houses across Belgrave South and the Heights. Anything built here now goes up in a designated termite area, because Yarra Ranges designated the whole shire. New building work needs termite management to AS 3660.1. A detached garage or shed is the exception the regulations allow. Termites goes further.
