Seven reserves and Black Hill
Selby is hilly, with the steep Black Hill on its eastern side, and the article lists seven reserves, from Selby Conservation Reserve to Myanook Bushland Reserve. About four-tenths of the land is rural conservation zone on the planning maps. Wombats, echidnas, koalas and black wallabies are among the animals commonly seen.

In the 1920s Selby's weekend population rivalled Belgrave's, and some Melburnians built homes here; subdivision followed later. In a house of any age, a timber pest inspection under AS 4349.3 is the usual check, and it is mainly visual. Selby is in Yarra Ranges, designated a termite area across the shire. New building work there has to be protected.
