Powerful Owls and rat bait
The Powerful Owl is on Wikipedia's list of birds in Belgrave Heights, alongside kookaburras, wedge-tailed eagles and red wattlebirds. It is listed as vulnerable in Victoria, and BirdLife Australia has found Powerful Owls among dead birds carrying dangerous levels of second-generation rat poisons. Those baits were suspended for a year from 24 March 2026. If rats are the problem, ask what bait will be used and where. Rats and mice sets out the options.

Both kinds of possum
Common ringtails and brushtails both live here. A brushtail in the roof can be caught in a humane trap and let go the same day on the same property, no more than 50 m away. A ringtail can't be trapped at all without a permit. Either way the lasting fix is closing the gap it came in by. Possums has the detail.

Birdsland and Monbulk Creek
Birdsland Reserve is 75 hectares of bushland, bought by the old Shire of Sherbrooke in 1982, and Monbulk Creek is part of a wildlife corridor between the national park and Lysterfield Lake Park. Close to a third of the suburb is park or reserve on the planning maps, and about a twentieth is under the flood overlay. On low, wet ground the Health department's advice on mosquitoes is to empty anything that holds standing water.

Snakes and mynas
Tiger snakes, eastern browns and red-bellied snakes are all recorded locally. Snakes are protected, and Yarra Ranges won't remove them; a licensed snake controller will, at your cost, and 136 186 has a list. Indian mynas are on the article's list of feral animals, but Yarra Ranges points out that they are not a declared pest animal in Victoria.

Next to the Heights
- Belgrave, Tecoma, Selby and Belgrave South
- All in Yarra Ranges with the Heights, so the whole group sits in the shire's termite designation. Belgrave South is mostly green wedge and rural conservation land rather than house blocks.
