Pest control in Montrose
Montrose was orchard country at the foot of Mount Dandenong, and a third of it is still green wedge and farming land.

Old orchard country at the foot of the mountain
Montrose sits at the foothills of Mount Dandenong. Settlers farmed it in the late 1800s, when it was called South Mooroolbark, and the high rainfall made orchards common into the early 1900s. Houses came from the 1920s, and young families after the Second World War.
The farming hasn't gone. On the planning maps about a third of Montrose is green wedge and farming land, a fifth is low-density residential and about a sixth is park or reserve. Ordinary suburban streets are only about a tenth of it.

Pest animals and deer on the bigger blocks
Under the Catchment and Land Protection Act, a landowner has to take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, get rid of them. Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits. On a few hectares of green wedge that duty is yours, not the council's.
Deer are a different case. Yarra Ranges runs a deer program funded by the state since 2021, with harvesters, volunteer shooters and advice on fencing; its Deer Program Officer is on 1300 368 333. Who to call sorts the animals by who deals with them.

Termites: the whole shire
Yarra Ranges is designated under the Building Regulations as an area where buildings are likely to be attacked by termites, so every Montrose address is in it. New building work must be protected, though a detached shed or garage need not be. An older house gets a timber pest inspection instead, and any treatment needs a pest controller licensed for timber pests. Termites has more.

What the council won't do
Yarra Ranges treats wasp nests on council land only. One in your garden or under your eaves is yours to get treated, by a licensed pest controller. A honeybee swarm is better off with a local beekeeper, who will often take it for a small fee or nothing. The council won't remove snakes either: they are protected, and 136 186 gives a list of licensed snake controllers. Wasps and bees explains.
