Pest control in Mount Evelyn

Mount Evelyn sits in a bend of Olinda Creek, with the national park's forest on its southern side and farmland over half its ground.

We connect you with a local pest controller who works in the hills.

In the bend of Olinda Creek

Mount Evelyn grew up in a right-angled bend of Olinda Creek, a permanent creek once called Running Creek. The southern reserves have been taken into the Dandenong Ranges National Park, and the Aqueduct Walk runs from Swansea Road to the Mount Evelyn Forest, which is part of the park too.

More than half the suburb is green wedge and farming land on the planning maps, about a fifth is low-density residential, and close to nine-tenths sits under the bushfire management overlay, including almost all of its residential land.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Wikipedia: Mount Evelyn, Victoria and Vicmap Planning, the state's zone and overlay maps (DataVic), measured across the suburb.

Possums and rats in the roof

Brushtail possums are protected. You may trap one humanely and release it the same day on your own property, no more than 50 m from where it was caught; taking it further away is prohibited, and killing one needs an Authority to Control Wildlife. A possum that keeps coming back is a sign the way in is still open. Possums has the steps.

Rats are the other roof guest. The strongest baits, the second-generation anticoagulants, were suspended nationally for a year from 24 March 2026. BirdLife has found Powerful Owls among dead birds carrying dangerous levels of them. Rats and mice explains the change.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Victorian Government: brushtail possum management methods, Manningham Council: native animals and insects, Victorian Government: Authorities to Control Wildlife 2025, APVMA: second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides to be restricted (March 2026) and BirdLife Australia: protect Aussie birds from SGAR rat poisons.

On the farmland

A landowner has a duty under the Catchment and Land Protection Act to take reasonable steps against established pest animals. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits. That applies to the green wedge blocks around Mount Evelyn as much as anywhere. Deer are handled differently: Yarra Ranges runs a deer program, reached through its Deer Program Officer on 1300 368 333.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (Vic), s.20 (authorised version 072), Cardinia Shire Council: problem animals and Yarra Ranges Council: deer.

Termites and the shire

Yarra Ranges is a designated termite area from one end to the other. New building work in Mount Evelyn must be protected against termites, apart from a detached shed or garage, and termite work needs a pest controller with the timber pest authorisation.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Building Regulations 2018 (Vic), regs 150 and 151 (authorised version 031) and Department of Health: pest control licence applications.

Around Mount Evelyn

Montrose, Kalorama and Silvan
The same shire, so the same termite designation, and more of the same mix of farmland and bush.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Wikipedia: Mount Evelyn, Victoria and Yarra Ranges Council: termites.
