Pest control in Silvan
Silvan is reservoir and berry country, halfway between Belgrave and Lilydale, and the town that gave its name to the silvanberry.

Reservoir and farmland
Silvan Reservoir was commissioned in 1917 and finished in 1932, and about a third of the locality is public utility land on the planning maps. Most of the rest is green wedge zone. The soils suit fruit, vegetables and flowers, and the pick-your-own orchards and berry farms draw visitors. The Tulip Festival brings more than 100,000 visitors every September and October. Only a sliver of Silvan is zoned for town houses.

Pest animals and deer on a farm
A Silvan landowner has a legal duty over established pest animals under the Catchment and Land Protection Act: take reasonable steps to prevent their spread and eradicate them as far as possible. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits.
Deer are a different matter. Yarra Ranges runs a deer program, funded by the state since 2021, that offers DeerScan reporting, harvesters, volunteer shooters and help with fencing. Call the Deer Program Officer on 1300 368 333.

Swarms and wasp nests
A honeybee swarm is worth a call to a local beekeeper, who will often take it for a small fee or for nothing. A wasp nest is another job. Yarra Ranges treats nests on its own land, not on farms or house blocks, so a nest on your property needs a pest controller. Wasps and bees explains the difference.

Termites
The whole of Yarra Ranges is designated for termites under the Building Regulations, Silvan with it. A new house or extension has to be protected; a stand-alone shed is exempt. Termites has the standards.
