Heritage buildings and timber pests

Robert Graham's slab house, Merrimu, and the hut that served as the first post office are still standing. Burnham Beeches and Mawarra, both on Sherbrooke Road, are on the Victorian Heritage Register. The planning maps put about four-fifths of the locality under a heritage overlay.

Yarra Ranges is a designated termite area throughout. For an existing building the usual check is a timber pest inspection to AS 4349.3. Treatment needs a pest controller licensed for timber pests. Termites has the standards.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Wikipedia: Sherbrooke, Victoria, Vicmap Planning, the state's zone and overlay maps (DataVic), measured across the suburb, Yarra Ranges Council: termites, Standards Australia: AS 4349.3-2010 and Department of Health: pest control licence applications.

Sherbrooke Forest's possums and gliders

Sherbrooke Forest is cool temperate rainforest, listed as endangered. It has several species of possum and glider, along with wombats, echidnas, platypus and lyrebirds. Possums are protected: a brushtail caught in a roof can only be let go on the same property, within 50 m.

The strongest rat baits have been suspended since 24 March 2026, and BirdLife Australia found owls among dead birds carrying dangerous levels of them. Rats and mice explains the change.

Checked 25 October 2026 against Wikipedia: Sherbrooke, Victoria, Victorian Government: brushtail possum management methods, APVMA: second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides to be restricted (March 2026) and BirdLife Australia: protect Aussie birds from SGAR rat poisons.
