Pest control in Kallista

Kallista was South Sassafras until 1925, a district of 10-acre selections that became weekenders. Sherbrooke Forest is on the village's doorstep.

From selections to weekenders

South Sassafras, as Kallista was called until 1925, was opened to free selectors in 1893. Once roads arrived between 1912 and 1918, the 10-acre farm blocks were cut up for weekenders and holiday homes. Even so, about seven-tenths of Kallista is green wedge on the planning maps.

On rural land, the Catchment and Land Protection Act makes the owner take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, to eradicate them. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits. Deer are a council program in Yarra Ranges: the Deer Program Officer is on 1300 368 333. Who to call has the rest.

The lyrebirds next to the village

Kallista Village is best known for being next to Sherbrooke Forest, where the superb lyrebird population has grown since efforts began to reduce feral cats and foxes. Rat bait matters near a forest like this. The strongest rat poisons were suspended on 24 March 2026, and BirdLife Australia found Powerful Owls and Southern Boobooks among dead birds carrying dangerous levels of them. Rats and mice explains what that means for a rodent job.

Old cottages, termite rules

About a quarter of Kallista is under a heritage overlay. Yarra Ranges is a designated termite area across the whole shire. New work must be protected, and an older cottage is best checked with a timber pest inspection. Termites has more.

Kallista's neighbours

Monbulk
North-east, and on the Dandenong Ranges Tourist Track, which follows Sassafras Creek past Kallista and Monbulk to Emerald.
Sherbrooke, Olinda, The Patch, Belgrave and Selby
Also on Kallista's boundary. Every one is Yarra Ranges, so the termite and wasp rules don't change.
