Pest control in Tecoma
Tecoma took its name in 1925 from a railway station named after the Tecoma shrub, and its northern edge meets Sherbrooke Forest.

Up against Sherbrooke Forest
Tecoma lies between Belgrave and Upwey, and its northern side runs up to Sherbrooke Forest. About seven tenths of the suburb is zoned low density residential on the planning maps, and about a twelfth is park or reserve.
A possum in the roof is the usual result of living beside the forest. A brushtail can be trapped humanely, but it has to be released on the same property, within 50 m of where it was caught. Taking it further is against the law, and killing one needs an Authority to Control Wildlife. Trapping or disturbing any other wildlife without a permit is illegal too, so the lasting fix is to close the gap once the animal is out. Possums goes through it.

Termites, shire-wide
Yarra Ranges is designated as an area where buildings are prone to termites, and Tecoma is inside it like every other suburb in the shire. New building work has to be protected. A detached garage or shed doesn't.
About one part in twenty-five of Tecoma is under a Heritage Overlay on the planning maps, and the Horatio Jones House in Blackwood Street is on the Victorian Heritage Register. For an older house, a timber pest inspection to AS 4349.3 is mostly non-invasive, so it reports what can be seen. Treatment needs a pest controller whose licence includes timber pests. More on termites.

Shops on the highway
Tecoma's shops face Burwood Highway. A food business among them has to take all practicable measures to keep pests out and to get rid of any that get in. That duty comes from clause 24 of the Food Standards Code's Standard 3.2.2, which doesn't itself require a pest contract or written records.

A wasp nest or a swarm
Yarra Ranges Council treats wasp nests on council land only. A nest in a Tecoma garden is the householder's to have treated. A honeybee swarm is a different call: a local beekeeper will usually collect it, often free or for a small fee. Wasps and bees has the detail.

Either side of Tecoma
- Belgrave, Upwey, Ferny Creek, Sherbrooke and Belgrave Heights
- Yarra Ranges as well, with the same termite designation and the same council line on wasp nests.
Past Upwey, Upper Ferntree Gully is mostly in Knox, where the owner signs a termite statement before a building permit is issued.
