Pest control in Monbulk
Monbulk still works the land it was cut into farms for in 1893. In 2016, nursery and flower growing were the two commonest jobs among the people who live here.

A town that grows things
Monbulk began in 1893 as 76 ten-acre farms, and its soils carried orchards, vegetables and cut flowers. The jam factory that the fruitgrowers' co-operative started in 1897 closed in 1991, but the town is still an agricultural centre, home to Garden Express's growing facilities and to Tesselaar Flowers. About three-quarters of Monbulk is green wedge or farming zone on the planning maps, with houses on larger blocks around the township.
Farmland brings its own pests and its own duty. Under the Catchment and Land Protection Act, a landowner has to take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and to eradicate them as far as possible. The Act names no species; Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits.

Deer in the gardens
The state's deer plan says deer have been reported in the ranges for about ten years. Yarra Ranges has run a state-funded deer program since 2021, with DeerScan reporting, harvesters, volunteer shooters and advice on fencing. Its Deer Program Officer is on 1300 368 333. A pest controller isn't the person for deer.

Rat bait has changed
The strongest rat and mouse baits, the second-generation anticoagulants, were suspended for a year from 24 March 2026 and are now restricted chemical products. Where they can still be used, it is only under the instructions published in the Gazette, and throw packs go only inside tamper-resistant bait stations. BirdLife has found dangerous levels of these poisons in dead Powerful Owls and Southern Boobooks. Rats and mice has the rest.

Termites, shire-wide
Monbulk is inside Yarra Ranges' termite designation, like the rest of the shire. New building work needs termite protection to the standard. Treating an existing infestation takes a licence that covers timber pests, which not every pest controller holds. The licence page explains how to check.
