Pest control in Upwey

Upwey has three creeks, the national park and Birdsland next door, and a Main Street of cafés beside the railway station.

We connect you with a local pest controller who works in the hills.

Three creeks

Ferny Creek, Monbulk Creek and Mast Gully Creek all run through Upwey. Glenfern Valley Bushlands, about 40 hectares on Glenfern Road, falls from the ridge down to Ferny Creek, and Birdsland Reserve and Dandenong Ranges National Park both adjoin the suburb. A small part of Upwey, around a fortieth, is under the flood overlay on the planning maps.

Mosquitoes breed in still water. The Health department's advice is to get rid of standing water and to avoid being bitten. Spiders and insects covers the rest.

Old homesteads, mudbrick and termites

John Ferguson, the first known settler, arrived about 1870, and his homestead still stands in Birdwood Avenue. Alistair Knox designed two mudbrick houses here. Most of Upwey is now low-density house blocks, about six-tenths of the land on the planning maps.

Every one of those houses is in a designated termite area, because Yarra Ranges covers the whole shire. Buying an older place, the check is a timber pest inspection to AS 4349.3. Treatment needs a licence that includes timber pests, which you can check on the Health department's register. Termites has more.

Cafés on Main Street

Upwey's shopping strip runs along Main Street beside the station, and small cafés and restaurants make up most of it. Each of them is bound by the Food Standards Code to take all practicable measures to keep pests out of the premises and to eradicate any that get in. The Code doesn't spell out a contract or a logbook, but a licensed controller keeps a record of each treatment for three years.
