Pest control in Olinda

Olinda started as a logging settlement and grew on berries, flowers and guesthouses. Its cafés now sit between the Botanic Garden and the national park.

We connect you with a local pest controller who works in the hills.

Kitchens on a weekend strip

Olinda lives on its visitors. The town has restaurants and cafés, antique and craft shops and galleries, and tourism is its main industry. Any food business in it has to take all practicable measures to keep pests out of the premises and to get rid of any that get in, under the Food Standards Code.

The Code doesn't ask for a pest contract or a logbook. A licensed pest controller does keep a record of every pesticide job for three years, though: the product, where it went, the pests and the re-entry period. That record is worth asking for. Cockroaches and other insects covers the kitchen pests.

Old houses in a termite shire

Arthur Streeton built Longacres on Range Road after he came home in 1919, and it is now on the Victorian Heritage Register. Guesthouses and weekend cottages followed until the Second World War. The planning maps put about a fifth of Olinda under a heritage overlay.

The whole of Yarra Ranges is designated as an area where buildings are likely to be attacked by termites. New building work has to be protected. For a house that is already standing, the check is a timber pest inspection to AS 4349.3, which is mostly visual and doesn't open up walls. Treatment needs a pest controller whose licence includes timber pests. Termites has the detail.

Berry farms, the garden and the park

Olinda grew on berry farming, dairying and flowers once land opened for horticulture in the early 1900s. On today's planning maps, two-fifths of the locality is still green wedge and farming land and over half is park or reserve, with the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden on the town's east side.

On farmed land the owner has a duty under the Catchment and Land Protection Act to take reasonable steps against established pest animals. Deer are handled differently: Yarra Ranges has run a state-funded deer program since 2021, and its Deer Program Officer is on 1300 368 333.
