Pest control in The Patch

The Patch took its name from a stand of mountain ash in the 1860s, and it is still mostly rural: nurseries, old farm blocks and a general store that is also the post office.

Ten-acre blocks, then nurseries

The Patch was cut into 10-acre farming blocks in the 1890s depression, for unemployed people from the city, and berry growing had taken hold by the end of that decade. Today it has several commercial nurseries, and about nine-tenths of its land is green wedge or farming zone on the planning maps.

On land like that, pest animals are the landowner's problem by law. The Catchment and Land Protection Act requires a landowner to take reasonable steps to stop established pest animals spreading and, as far as possible, to eradicate them. Cardinia's council, for one, names rabbits.

The house, the shed and termites

Yarra Ranges is designated a termite area across the whole shire. New building work on a house in The Patch has to include termite protection, but the Building Regulations exempt a detached shed or garage. A timber pest inspection is the check for a house already standing. Termites covers what the inspector looks at.

A wasp nest on your own land

The council treats wasp nests on council land only. One on your block is yours to have dealt with, by a licensed pest controller. Wasps and bees says how to tell a swarm from a nest.
